Enjoy a memorable evening at San Carlo Theater, exclusively reserved for the ESNR Meeting !

You don’t have to be a lover of the opera, symphony or ballet to appreciate this stunning Opera House situated adjacent to Palazzo Reale.

San Carlo Theater is the oldest Opera House in Europe considering that the original theater was built in 1737, to a design by Giovanni Medrano and Angelo Carasale; after a huge fire, it burned down in 1816 and was rebuilt in less than a year.

The theater was built for King Charles III (1716 – 1788) and inaugurated on 4 November 1737 - the king’s name day. Like the famous Teatro alla Scala in Milan, it is a horseshoe-shaped theater with tiered boxes rising six stories high. The interior was adorned in sumptuous blue upholstery and gold decor, the colors of the Bourbon Monarchy, later changed to the now-traditional red and gold.

With 3300 seats, it was the largest Opera House in the world at the time.

Attracting composers like Gioacchino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi, Vincenzo Bellini, Niccolò Paganini and Gaetano Donizetti, the San Carlo Theater thrived through the 19th and into the mid-20th century despite the fire of 1816 and the severe damages from World War II air raids in 1943.

The evening will commence with a lively Concerto performed by a group of selected artists and an opera singer who will perform a collection of famous arias and lyrics from classic and modern repertoires. The Concerto will be followed by a dinner-buffet served in the elegant Historical Foyer of the Theatre.
