Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

you may have received a couple of e-mails from one of the ex-presidents regarding the recent leadership of the ESNR. I initially accepted this initiative as a democratic right to forward their decision for the elections even though the majority of the Executive Committee has had opposite opinions and I did not react earlier. Today, it has come to my attention that you have received another message with "voting instructions" from the same ex-president of our society.

This is unheard of in the history of our society, and it is a matter of deep concern. I hesitate to mention what the equivalent of this would be in the political world, but it is far from democratic decision making, when members are "instructed" how to vote.

I also would like to emphasize that the "Neuroradiology Future Forum" is not an official ESNR forum and is not supported by the ESNR. It is a private initiative endorsed by some ex-presidents and ex-officers of the ESNR.

On behalf of the leadership of the ESNR and the Executive Committee, I would like to express how sorry I am for this unfortunate incident. I would strongly encourage you to make your own choices, without any external influence.

However, it may be useful to put this matter into a historical context. In all organizations there comes a time when one generation leaves the stage, and another generation takes over the torch. Sometimes this happens in harmony, sometimes not, nevertheless older generations tend to cling to power. The current leadership of our society has an excellent track record by all standards: we have increased the membership of our society from 315 paying members 8 years ago to more than 1,300 individual members today, and an additional more than 2,000 institutional members. We have continued building a successful postgraduate educational program in diagnostic NR, pediatric NR, spine NR, interventional NR, which many other societies envy. We have normalized relations with other societies (ESR, ESPR, ESMINT, EANM, EANO, Eurospine, etc.) and we have moved from a model of conflict and opposition to a model of collaboration and shared opportunities, mainly from an irregular club to a well-structured society. We have defended the profession of neuroradiologists against other disciplines who tend to take over our field, such as neurology, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, orthopedic surgery and cardiology.

The ESNR is growing and thriving, and our current leadership has a proven track record that has moved our society from a "niche player" to a large, well-respected, mainstream society, with a large membership database and a very successful scientific and educational program.

We consider our members to be mature and motivated professionals, and we have faith and confidence in the democratic election process, without the need for "voting instructions" given by a previous generation of our leadership.

As my final comment, I would like to ask all of you to vote for whomever you think is right, and take some time to check the background of the candidates.

The electronic voting will start on August 12, 2014 and will end on September 12, 2014 at 0:00 CET (1:00 EET). You will be informed about the electronic voting soon.

With all my best wishes.

Prof. Dr. E. Turgut Tali, President

On behalf of the ESNR Executive Committee
